Maroubra
I’ve been to Maroubra twice now. You might know it. But for those who don’t, Maroubra is a beachside suburb located in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. To the locals, most often it’s just a suburb, the place they live. Yes, the area may hold memories and sentimental value, but they don’t realise how special it really is.
I was introduced to the suburb of Maroubra by a close friend of mine. As a person who grew up in the area, he knows the place like the back of his hand. Each spot holds a special memory, memories unique to him and his family.
Being situated on the coast, the area has a laid-back and friendly atmosphere, with the beach always a short walk away. Those living in Maroubra have access to countless scenic walks and sweeping views right at their fingertips.
As with any suburb in Sydney, I’m sure Maroubra goes through periods of development, however, much of the area has remained untouched for many years. On top of its beauty and distinctive feel, this makes Maroubra the perfect place to create memories with friends and family, to build a small community.
I grew up in the Hills district. As a result, the experiences I was exposed to while growing up were extremely different. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE the Hills and everything about it. But unlike Maroubra, there is almost no sense of community. The landscape is constantly changing, and people come and go. Neighbourhood bbqs rarely exist, and places that hold cherished memories are often bulldozed to make room for yet another block of apartments.
The fresh perspective and modern nature of the Hills district is often what attracts people to the area, and in comparison, Maroubra may seem old and run down. But that is what I love about it. It’s nothing special, but it’s the perfect place to create memories.
